USE
It
treats constipation.
It works by increasing the amount of water your intestine absorbs. This
softens the stool, making it easier to have a bowel movement. It also
increases pressure, which prompts the muscles in your intestines to move
stool.
SIDE EFFECT
A very common side effect of lactulose, particularly at high doses, is diarrhoea.
This happens in more than 1 in 10 people. Drink lots of fluids, such as
water or squash, to avoid dehydration. Signs of dehydration include
peeing less than usual or having dark, strong-smelling pee.
PRECAUTION
You can eat and drink normally while taking lactulose. It might help to cut down on foods such as pastries, puddings, sweets, cheese and cake for a while, as these foods can make constipation worse
